Choosing the Correct Drain Plug for Your Aluminum Boat
Posted on: May 11, 2026
When it comes to snap plugs, there are a lot of options on the market. We suggest choosing a reputable brand for starters and secondly, a stainless-steel option only. Having brass fittings or drain plugs in your aluminum boat mixed with the salt of the sea water will trigger the galvanic corrosion process. These two metals are so dissimilar that the aluminum can start to corrode. Any wiring, fittings or hardware in your aluminum boat should be marine-grade, coated or stainless steel when it cannot be aluminum. If any electrical work takes place in your boat, it is important to place a catch system on the decks, be it a piece of carpet or cardboard and vacuum up any pieces of extra wiring that may have fell and not allow them to find their way to your bilge or waterways in your decks. Never use a hose to clean up your work! Aluminum boats are low-maintenance when we follow a few simple rules.
